What is a Podiatrist?
Podiatrist originates from the Greek, 'Podos - Latros' - meaning Foot Physician.
Podiatrists are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems, however, due to the foot's unique interaction with the lower limb, podiatrists are often involved in the treatment of injuries affecting the lower back, hips, knees and shins.
Maintaining correct alignment within the lower limb is important to limit stress and to maintain good posture. Any problems with the position of our feet during stance are exaggerated during walking and further increased during weight-bearing athletic activity. Therefore, even minor changes in alignment may result in severe lower limb problems.
Why See a Podiatrist?
A podiatrist is a professional specialising in diagnosing and treating foot problems, and therefore is best trained in finding the cause of your foot pain.
Your feet have a direct impact on the rest of your body. Like the foundation of a house, your feet support the weight of everything above them. When a small problem develops in your feet, the subtle change in the way you walk will cause a chain reaction of adjustments in your posture and walking mechanics. These changes can put stress on joints higher up in your body, and lead to more serious problems.
Computerised Dynamic Gait Analysis
Here at PTS we use a TOG Gaitscan to get a complete picture of how the feet function in a weight-bearing and moving situation. By standing and walking on a pressure mat sensors in the mat can locate areas of poor foot function. This information can then be used to fabricate a pair of prescription orthotics to restore correct foot function.
What are Prescription Orthotics?
Prescription orthotics look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Orthotics work on your feet in much the same way as glasses work on your eyes – they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back to proper alignment. Orthotics fit in your shoe as comfortably as an insole, and have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.
